Hilltop Nusery School

Some of the children at Hilltop Nursery School have been looking at Road Safety through the creative context of the Post Office, due to their interest in the process of writing and sending letters. This involved a trip to the local Post Office and Pillar Box.

Preparing for our trip to the Post Office, the children discussed how to stay safe on the journey, thus completing their own risk assessment for the outing. Some of the children’s comments were

•    “We need to stay on the pavement.”
•    “Hold hands, because you might go on the road if not.”
•    “Hold hands when crossing the road.”
•    “Wait for the green man, because he tells you to go.”
•    “Be careful of cars on the road.”

We had the option to wear hi-vis jackets on the trip, but because it was sunny outside, the children decided we didn’t need to wear these on this occasion. On our journey we talked about some of the hazards we could see, such as cars parked on the pavement and listening and watching for cars coming out of driveways. As we approached the main road, the children noticed the lollipop person, and recognised that they would be able to help us cross the road safely, stopping traffic with their lollipop stick. Even although the lollipop person was there, we still made sure to Stop, Look both ways, Listen, and Think before we crossed the road. After the children had bought stamps from the post office, and posted their letters, the lollipop person helped us back across the road, and again we were careful to Stop, Look, Listen, and Think. As we walked back to nursery, we thought about why the lollipop person was wearing such a bright coat, and the children knew that this was so they would be easily seen by traffic.

Then we spotted a red van parked on the other side of the road, and we looked at the picture of a crown on the van, which was the same crown we had seen on the Pillar Box. We realised this was the mail van. To have a closer look, we had to cross the road again, this time ourselves and without the help of a lollipop person. Again we made sure to Stop, look, listen and think before we crossed the road, and made sure to stay on the pavement side of the van, so we would be safe. The mail man let the children see all the letters he had in the back of the van, and then we got our picture taken beside the van.

We covered the following experiences and outcomes on our journey to the Post Office:

•    I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others, and to reduce the potential for harm when possible. HWB 0-16a
•    I know and can demonstrate how to travel safely. HWB 0-18a
•    By exploring my local community, I have discovered the different roles people play and how they can help. SOC 0-16a
We thoroughly enjoyed exploring road safety in this practical way!
